75th Anniversary of the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights Law Against Discrimination “Stop the Hate” Series: Current Challenges in Fair Housing
Session Description:
The Law Against Discrimination prohibits discrimination in housing. This panel will cover current challenges in fair housing. The focus of the panel will be primarily on New Jersey, but the panel will also include some discussion of challenges at the national level. The panel will include a discussion of the most important fair housing issues that the experienced advocates who will be serving as panelists have seen in their work. The panel will discuss fair housing challenges, including those related to systemic and interpersonal discrimination, and the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated and laid bare existing challenges. The panel will discuss both longstanding entrenched issues as well as new issues that have arisen more recently. Finally, the panelists will discuss possible steps to address the challenges that they identified during the course of the panel discussion.

Learning Objectives:
• An understanding of some of the most prevalent forms of housing discrimination in New Jersey
• An awareness of how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated long-standing inequities in housing.
• An acknowledgement that April is Fair Housing Month and clarification that affordable housing and fair housing are not the same
• Examples of how New Jersey has the opportunity to enforce fair housing law more effectively
